Isla Contoy: a Mexican wonder

Isla Contoy is located at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, only 30km from Isla Mujeres, this small island of less than 9km long is the oldest national park in the state of Quintana Roo. Nobody lives here, except for a few biologists and coastguards!

It is a protected area that is home to the most important nesting place for seabirds in the entire Caribbean zone of Mexico. There are also ten turtle nesting sites: The Loggerhead, Hawksbill turtle, and Dermatemys mawii.

There are seven saltwater lagoons on the island, of which only one is accessible to visitors, the Laguna Azul.

In essence, the Isla Contoy, in the Yucatan peninsula, is one of the places not to be missed when you are passing through the region. With its palm trees, its small paths, its crustaceans that wander around, and its magnificent white-sand beaches.

With only 200 people per day having access to the island. We enjoy a very social exclusivity, which we rarely have the opportunity to see in this region of Mexico, magnificent indeed, but very touristic!

During a day at Isla Contoy, it is possible to snorkel in the Ixlache reef where the water is crystal clear. You can see corals, fish, and even statues. Then, to relax during your visit to Isla Contoy, visit the small museum of the island, discover the fauna, the flora, and the only lagoon accessible to the public: La Laguna Azul. Also, many birds can be found there, including the frigate bird, the symbolic bird of the island.

After a small meal, relax and enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches and crystal-clear water that Isla Contoy offers. Before returning to Cancun, it is possible to make a stop on Isla Mujeres, visit the island!

As Isla Contoy is a protected island, only a few companies have the permit to go there. Boat departures are from Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

There are also excursions to Contoy from Playa del Carmen. There will take you by van from Cancun to join the boat.
