Snorkeling in Isla Mujeres

The best spots for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres

To visit Isla Mujeres is to enjoy the fine sandy beaches and transparent waters of the Caribbean! And the best part is that is only 20 minutes from Cancun! We come here mainly to relax in the best resort in Isla Mujeres, visit Playa Norte (which is considered one of the best beaches in the world), but also snorkeling and dive in the 2nd largest reef in the world!

So, if you are looking for the best spots for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres, let us help you. Here is a short list for you to discover.

Garrafon Park

Garrafon Natural Park offers both a place to relax and several activities. Represents a much more tranquil and exclusive alternative.

It is a small private beach where you can access by paying an entrance fee of 90$MXN which includes a lounge chair, umbrella, showers, and bathrooms.

It is the ideal place for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres as Garrafon is part of the longest coral reef in the northern hemisphere and is home to a rich ecosystem.

  • Getting to Parque Garrafon: it is located in Punta Sur, in the southern tip of the island (10min by taxi from the ferry).
  • Important: it is better to arrive early (around 10:30 am) because lounge chairs and umbrellas are available according to availability.

With such transparent water and the Great Mayan Reef, which is the 2nd largest reef in the world, snorkeling is a must on Isla Mujeres.

El Farito

El Farito is the most popular snorkeling spot on the island and is only 5 minutes away by boat. It is the smallest lighthouse on Isla Mujeres, surrounded by a reef with fish and coral.

It is possible to get there with a 1-hour tour, but we recommend a longer tour which also includes part of the Museum of Underwater Art in Manchones Reef. As it is 30m deep, it is possible to snorkel or dive there.

There are about 50 diving spots in the area for all levels (beginner to advanced).

Lastly, our best recommendation is to explore the 800m long Manchones Reef at Isla Mujeres with its many corals and fish.

Also, the largest underwater museum in the world!

With its 473 sculptures at 8m underwater, it is the best place to dive in Isla Mujeres!

These statues were created to replace the corals that have disappeared due to mass tourism and pollution. It is, therefore, a second habitat for the biodiversity that inhabits the seabed.

During Whale Shak Season

Here is another great option for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres! In an environmentally friendly way.

From June to September, whale sharks come to enjoy the warm waters of Isla Mujeres and Holbox and this is the opportunity to observe them a little closer.

Fortunately, they are protected. You can swim with the whale sharks with a guide if you attend certain rules, for example:

-They can be approached by swimming or snorkeling at a safe distance of 2 m

-It is forbidden to touch or feed them.

But don't worry! There's nothing to be afraid of. With its 12m length, the whale shark is the largest fish in the world, but it is harmless!

5 things to do and add to your bucket list in Isla Mujeres

In ancient times, the Mayans used Isla Mujeres to sacrifice virgin girls. But, It owes its name to a Spanish explorer who came from Cuba in search of manpower. The many statues of women in Mayan temples inspired him.

Due to its original and interesting history, it gathers many great attractions and secrets. All of them, waiting for you to explore.

Here is a short list of things to do if you are planning to visit the magnificent Isla Mujeres.

In the clear waters of Isla Mujeres, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, a unique museum was created in 2009: MUSA (Underwater Museum of Contemporary Art). With its 500 sculptures immersed in water 4 to 8 m deep, is the largest underwater museum in the world and Mexico.
Silhouettes, mute crowds imploring or threatening, but also scenes of daily life: a man on his couch watching TV...
These sculptures - signed by 6 artists - are available in several ways, either by diving, with mask and snorkel, or by taking a boat with a glass bottom. This genius idea is the work of Jason deCaires Taylor, an English sculptor with a passion for scuba diving, who acquired his international reputation when he created, in 2006, the first underwater sculpture park in Grenada, in the West Indies.

Garrafon Natural Park is a must thing to do in Isla Mujeres because it offers both a place to relax plus, several more activities.
It is important to understand that the beaches of Isla Mujeres are crowded and Garrafon offers a much more tranquil and exclusive alternative. So, if you ask us, is the ideal place for snorkeling, as is part of the longest coral reef in the northern hemisphere and is home to a rich ecosystem.
It is also possible to kayak, zip line (there are 3 of them!), enjoy the swimming pool facing the sea and rest in the hammocks between the palm trees. Also, enjoy a restaurant on site!

It truly is a little treasure, and much less frequented than the Playa Norte area! Why? Well, few people know about it and that's why it is a must-see place in Isla Mujeres.
"El Parque de Los Sueños", also called Kin Ha, is a beach club that allows you to enjoy the island to the fullest.
It is a small complex facing the Caribbean Sea where you can find a restaurant with a terrace, an infinity pool with a bar, several areas to relax in the sun, and easy access to the sea.
Kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling equipment can be rented on site.

With such transparent water and the Grand Mayan Reef, which is the 2nd largest reef in the world, snorkeling is a great thing to do in Isla Mujeres.
To practice snorkeling in Isla Mujeres without a tour, we recommend you rather go to a beach club like Kin Ha, Garrafon, since both provide the equipment.
On the other hand, taking a snorkeling tour allows you to see much more!
El Farito is the most popular snorkeling spot on the island and is only 5 minutes away by boat. It is the smallest lighthouse on Isla Mujeres, with a reef at its surroundings with fish and coral. There is also the submerged statue of La Virgen del Farito, the saint of fishermen.

Isla Contoy is only 30 km away from Isla Mujeres. It is one of the most beautiful destinations in Mexico!
This tiny, almost deserted island is a national park that is home to the most important seabird nesting site in the Caribbean!
Its access is limited to 200 people per day, so it is very important to book for the chance to enjoy its calm, sandy beaches and transparent water.
The visit of Contoy includes free time on the beach, a small guided tour on its paths (for those who wish), and a good lunch of Tikinxik fish.
It's paradise on earth!

It is a protected area that is home to the most important nesting place for seabirds in the entire Caribbean zone of Mexico. There are also ten turtle nesting sites: The Loggerhead, Hawksbill turtle, and Dermatemys mawii.

There are seven saltwater lagoons on the island, of which only one is accessible to visitors, the Laguna Azul.

Then, to relax during your visit to Isla Contoy, visit the small museum of the island, discover the fauna, the flora, and the only lagoon accessible to the public: La Laguna Azul. Also, many birds can be found there, including the frigate bird, the symbolic bird of the island.

¿What is Casa Caracol?

casa caracol isla mujeres
Casa Caracol in Isla Mujeres - Hotel Izla

The architect Octavio Campo was born in Guanajuato in 1943, is a Mexican painter with a versatile style.

Octavio Campo, with a flash of inspiration in the 90s, built Casa Caracol. Legend has it that his brother, Eduardo, visited him and his wife frequently, so Octavio decided to make him a house. But as a good architect and painter, it could not be any house. It had to be different, peculiar, and unique. Octavio went out to the sea to look for a breath of answers until he grabbed a snail from the sand, and an idea emerged.

It was a house on the sea, surrounded by greenery, and with an exterior in the shape of a snail. Undoubtedly captivated Octavio. It caused such a stir... That one is never enough. So, a few years later, they began to build several of these around with a pool and gardens — an incredible set to visit.

If you think that snails inspired only the outside, we are pleased to tell you that you are wrong. It is an integral concept. The interior is wholly designed without losing sight of the idea. The main house has two floors; in the lower part, there is the kitchen, living room and a small bathroom. At the top are the master bedroom and a bathroom with a unique bathtub.

Casa Caracol is located in the southern part, next to the road that surrounds Isla Mujeres.
