To visit Isla Mujeres is to enjoy the fine sandy beaches and transparent waters of the Caribbean! And the best part is that is only 20 minutes from Cancun! We come here mainly to relax in the best resort in Isla Mujeres, visit Playa Norte (which is considered one of the best beaches in the world), but also snorkeling and dive in the 2nd largest reef in the world!

So, if you are looking for the best spots for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres, let us help you. Here is a short list for you to discover.

Garrafon Park

Garrafon Natural Park offers both a place to relax and several activities. Represents a much more tranquil and exclusive alternative.

It is a small private beach where you can access by paying an entrance fee of 90$MXN which includes a lounge chair, umbrella, showers, and bathrooms.

It is the ideal place for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres as Garrafon is part of the longest coral reef in the northern hemisphere and is home to a rich ecosystem.

  • Getting to Parque Garrafon: it is located in Punta Sur, in the southern tip of the island (10min by taxi from the ferry).
  • Important: it is better to arrive early (around 10:30 am) because lounge chairs and umbrellas are available according to availability.

With such transparent water and the Great Mayan Reef, which is the 2nd largest reef in the world, snorkeling is a must on Isla Mujeres.

El Farito

El Farito is the most popular snorkeling spot on the island and is only 5 minutes away by boat. It is the smallest lighthouse on Isla Mujeres, surrounded by a reef with fish and coral.

It is possible to get there with a 1-hour tour, but we recommend a longer tour which also includes part of the Museum of Underwater Art in Manchones Reef. As it is 30m deep, it is possible to snorkel or dive there.

There are about 50 diving spots in the area for all levels (beginner to advanced).

Lastly, our best recommendation is to explore the 800m long Manchones Reef at Isla Mujeres with its many corals and fish.

Also, the largest underwater museum in the world!

With its 473 sculptures at 8m underwater, it is the best place to dive in Isla Mujeres!

These statues were created to replace the corals that have disappeared due to mass tourism and pollution. It is, therefore, a second habitat for the biodiversity that inhabits the seabed.

During Whale Shak Season

Here is another great option for snorkeling in Isla Mujeres! In an environmentally friendly way.

From June to September, whale sharks come to enjoy the warm waters of Isla Mujeres and Holbox and this is the opportunity to observe them a little closer.

Fortunately, they are protected. You can swim with the whale sharks with a guide if you attend certain rules, for example:

-They can be approached by swimming or snorkeling at a safe distance of 2 m

-It is forbidden to touch or feed them.

But don’t worry! There’s nothing to be afraid of. With its 12m length, the whale shark is the largest fish in the world, but it is harmless!
